MTV: ‘Twilight’ Stars Weigh In On What They Want For ‘Breaking Dawn’

Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz and others talk about splitting the book into two movies, who should direct and more.

By Jocelyn Vena

With the box-office success of “New Moon” and fans eagerly anticipating the June release of “Eclipse,” it looks almost certain that “Breaking Dawn,” the final book in the “Twilight Saga,” will hit the big screen. But there are two big questions surrounding the potential film: Who will direct it, and will it be split into two movies?

MTV News spoke with the “Twilight” stars last week at a New York screening of “New Moon” and asked them to weigh in on the saga’s future.

“If I had a wish list, Gus van Sant would be pretty cool,” Peter Facinelli said, mirroring Robert Pattinson’s director pick. “I just think he’d be an interesting choice for it. I mean, ‘Milk’ was phenomenal. I would just love to see ‘Breaking Dawn’ done, because I’d like to finish the whole chapter.”

MTV: ‘Eclipse’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

It might not hit theaters till next year, but we’re bringing you all the vital details early!

By Larry Carroll

Nowadays, “New Moon” is tearing apart box-office records like a Cullen feasting on a freshly killed deer. With the “Twilight” sequel nabbing the advance-sales record, the biggest single-day record and the highest-grossing midnight showings of all time, fans have to wonder: Can this franchise get any bigger? Fortunately, they only have to wait seven months to get the answer.

Many of the saga’s stars have cited “Eclipse” as their favorite of Stephenie Meyer’s novels, and with “30 Days of Night” filmmaker David Slade at the helm, it seems likely to be a very distinctive entry into the blockbuster series. With that in mind (and since we’re always on top of the latest “Twilight” news) we wanted to bring you our cheat sheet for “Eclipse” a little bit early to give you one-stop shopping for all the latest details on what could possibly be the biggest film of 2010.

MTV: ‘New Moon’ Fans Think Movie Deserves Oscar Nominations

‘Let’s give young people a chance to win some Oscars,’ says one New York Twilighter.

By Eric Ditzian

Could two disparate 2009 news stories combine to make an unlikely third? In June, the Academy of Arts and Sciences announced that the Oscars’ Best Picture category would expand from five films to 10. And this past week, “New Moon” opened to a staggering $140.7 million at the domestic box office. Is it possible that a vastly more inclusive Oscar race could welcome Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s vampire saga to its esteemed contest?

Critics certainly reacted strongly — and often negatively — to “New Moon,” but moviegoers came out in droves, and after the mega blockbuster “The Dark Knight” failed to nab a Best Picture nod in 2008, the Academy might be looking to make a change. Or not. The idea of vampires joining the likes of Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman in “Invictus”) seems a bit of a stretch. Yet the Twilighters MTV News spoke to at a recent fan event in Times Square were certain “New Moon” deserved some Oscar love.

“They always give the [nominations] to the boring movies,” said Vanesa Reyes, who said she and her friends planned to see the movie four or five times over its first weekend. “Let’s give young people a chance to win some Oscars. It’s time for a change.”

EW.com: Alex Meraz of ‘New Moon’ talks playing ‘bad-boy’ Paul, bulking up, and ‘Twilight’ fandom

Alex Meraz of ‘New Moon’ talks playing ‘bad-boy’ Paul, bulking up, and ‘Twilight’ fandom

by Kate Ward

These days, Alex Meraz, the 24-year-old actor who plays New Moon’s Paul — the most explosive member of the wolf pack — is washing his hands. As well he should — following New Moon’s giant, record-breaking weekend, the actor is getting recognized more than ever. And that’s quite a change for Meraz, considering his previous work includes small indie flicks, and a small role in 2005’s The New World. The actor took time out of shaking hands to talk to EW about Native Americans in film, working out for the role, and why he’ll never be a diva.

Fandango: ‘New Moon’ Shatters Box Office Records!

‘New Moon’ Shatters Box Office Records!

By: Erik Davis

We already brought you the news that The Twilight Saga: New Moon broke the record for best midnight opening (beating this past summer’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), but while you were scarfing down popcorn and inhaling Robert Pattinson this weekend, the film broke a few other records too.

On Saturday it was announced that New Moon had successfully beat The Dark Knight’s opening day record of $67 million with a whopping $72 million, which was due, in part, to the insanely large number of advance tickets told right here on Fandango (more on that in a minute). Once New Moon broke both those records, everyone had their eyes peeled on the best opening weekend record, currently held by The Dark Knight with $158 million.

Unfortunately for you Twi-hards out there hoping for a sweep, New Moon failed to snatch the weekend record from Batman, but the film did finish with $140 million for the three-day, earning it the number three spot (replacing Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) on the best opening weekend of all time list. The only two films ahead of New Moon are Spider-Man 3 and The Dark Knight, which, in all honesty, is pretty damn impressive.

MTV: ‘New Moon’ Actor Michael Welch Calls Opening- Weekend Success ‘Amazing’

Welch tells MTV News he has his sights set on all-time box-office champ ‘Titanic.’

By Larry Carroll

If you’ve been living under a rock (or you’re just now emerging from the local movie theater where you’ve spent the last three days watching “New Moon” repeatedly), then perhaps you don’t know that the “Twilight” sequel debuted this weekend with one of the biggest openings ever.

In the wake of such news, fan favorite Michael Welch swung by the MTV studios Monday morning (November 23) to give us his first interview following the film’s massive success. With an extra bounce in his step and an ear-to-ear grin on his face, the actor who plays Mike Newton in the series was eager to talk about “Twilight” entering the ranks of the biggest franchises of all time.

“I’m feeling great,” he said. “I feel really good. The night the movie opened, Friday night, Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter, threw a big ‘Twilight’ party at some fancy place ion Hollywood. As soon as I went in, I was talking to one of my buddies from Summit, and he was like, ‘Just guess what we made from the midnight screening and the one day.’ I was like, ‘$35 million,’ being generous. My girlfriend said, ‘$50 million,’ and I looked at her like she was crazy. He goes, ‘$70 million!’ and I just started laughing uncontrollably. To get those kinds of numbers, it means that many people must have seen the film at least three times by the end of opening day!

“That is insane,” he added. “And I love it.”

With that in mind, we hit the actor fans affectionately refer to as “Mike/Mike” with a few of the “New Moon” record-setting feats of accomplishment and got his thoughts on what it means for the current state of “Twilight” Nation:
