MTV: ‘New Moon’ Actor Justin Chon Talks Being Human Among Vampires

‘We don’t get nearly as much love as we’d like,’ he says of the non-bloodsucking characters in the Twilight’ franchise.

By Larry Carroll

LOS ANGELES — It’s not easy being human. Particularly if you’re in a “Twilight” movie and everyone around you is a vampire or a werewolf.

Nevertheless, solid supporting actors like Michael Welch, Anna Kendrick and Christian Serratos have watched their careers blossom over the past year, maximizing small amounts of screen time with endearing, largely improvised dialogue. Now, with “New Moon” about to hit theaters, 28-year-old Justin Chon is ready to steal scenes again alongside his non-bloodsucking buddies — and, with a role in the eye-popping Web short “Turbo,” bring some humanity back to Hollywood.

Recently, we caught up with Justin to talk about “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” Eric’s relationship with Angela and why it’s time to call “game over” on big-budget video game movies.

MTV: Jackson Rathbone Discusses Jasper’s ‘Eclipse’ Flashbacks

Actor’s big scenes in third ‘Twilight’ film involve riding horses, training Cullens to fight.

By Terri Schwartz

BOSTON — If “New Moon” is the low point of Jasper Hale’s presence in the”Twilight” saga, then “Eclipse” is the high. When MTV News caught up withJackson Rathbone last week on the set of his indie flick “Girlfriend,” he still had two weeks of “Eclipse” filming left. Much of his shooting had been completed, and he shared some of the big scenes he had already finished.

“I got to go back into my old roots, got to ride some horses again, which was nice. Got to put these riding boots to use, which is good,” Rathbone said, motioning to his boots. “I actually can ride a horse.”

In “Eclipse,” Jasper tells Bella (Kristen Stewart) about his life before he met Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli). Unlike Edward (Robert Pattinson), Rosalie (Nikki Reed), Esme (Elizabeth Reaser) and Emmett (Kellan Lutz), both Jasper and Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene) were transformed into vampires before they met Carlisle. Jasper plays a large role in the third installment of the series because he is the only vampire among them who knows how to combat the newborn vampire army Victoria (now played by Bryce Dallas Howard) is building.

Jasper’s backstory, which takes place during the Civil War, will be told through flashbacks, Rathbone confirmed. Though the explanation of Jasper’s history takes up a good portion of the novel, he hinted that the film version would be shorter.

MTV: ‘New Moon’ Director Chris Weitz May Return For ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘No official offer has been made,’ he says of fourth ‘Twilight’ movie.

By Eric Ditzian

Unlike so many film franchises with ultra-loyal followings, the “Twilight” series has roped in a new director for each successive installment. After Catherine Hardwicke steered the first flick to over $380 million in worldwide ticket sales, Chris Weitz took over for “New Moon,” which is already getting plaudits for its impressive CGI-enhanced action. “Eclipse,” meanwhile, will soon be wrapping principle photography in Vancouver under the watchful eye of director David Slade.

All of which raises a compelling question: Who will be tapped to helm “Breaking Dawn,” the expected adaptation of the fourth and final of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire book series? According to Weitz, it just might turn out to be him, as he hinted in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“No official offer has been made,” the director said when asked about directing “Breaking Dawn.” “The fans have been enthusiastic about the ['New Moon'] footage and the trailer, and the studio responds to that by feeling good about me. We’ll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct # 4.”

MTV:’Eclipse’ Cast Grows By One: Kirsten Prout Is Lucy

‘Eclipse’ Cast Grows By One: Kirsten Prout Is Lucy

by Adam Rosenberg

Jasper’s backstory just got a little bit easier to envision. The news broke last week that “Kyle XY” player Kirsten Prout joined the cast of “Eclipse,” third movie in the “Twilight” series. She’ll play Lucy, a vampire from Jasper Hale’s (Jackson Rathbone) past who factors prominently into his coming to terms with joining the ranks of the undead.

Prout is currently in Vancouver shooting for Lifetime miniseries “Seven Deadly Sins,” Bloody Disgusting reports. She’ll presumably join director David Slade and the “Twilight” team soon, as the “Eclipse” shoot is currently on in Vancouver.

Beware readers, mild spoilers ahead. Lucy doesn’t appear in the present-day telling of “Eclipse,” but she’ll factor into Jasper’s origin-revealing flashback. A former Confederate soldier during the Civil War, Jasper was “born” when he encountered a vampire named Maria (Catalina Sandino Moreno), who enlisted him into her growing vampire army. Jasper ended up turning on his creator, along with two of her soldiers, one of whom is Lucy.

MTV: ‘New Moon’ Soundtrack Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

We’ve been following the ‘Twilight’ music madness since the beginning.

By Eric Ditzian

Early last November, weeks before Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart introduced the world to “Twilight” movie madness, the film’s soundtrack shot straight to the top of the Billboard albums chart. After conquering bookstores and on its way to a $70 million opening weekend at theaters, “Twilight” had showed it could rock your iPod too.

Fast-forward a year, and it’s set to happen again. Little more than a month before “New Moon” premieres, the movie’s soundtrack is looking to make a splash when it drops Friday (October 16). MTV News has been mapping the universe of “New Moon” music for months — which bands made the cut, which bands didn’t, what the lucky few had to say about being selected — and we’ve gathered all our reporting together so you will know everything there is to know about the movie’s tunes, in MTV’s “New Moon” soundtrack cheat sheet:

Vanity Fair: On The Set Of ‘Eclipse’ With Ashley Greene

Twilight Watch: On the Set of Eclipse with Ashley Greene

by Andi Teran

Direct from the set of Twilight: Eclipse, VF.com caught up with Ashley Greene (aka “Alice Cullen” in the Twilight saga) to discuss filming the upcoming New Moon, cast reunions, and how becoming a vampire has changed her life.

VF.com: So you’re in Vancouver right now on the set of Eclipse …

Ashley Greene: I am. I just got to set! It’s an hour drive every day, really pretty; we’re way out in the middle of nowhere.

What are you filming today?

There’s a lot of action in this [movie], a lot of fight-sequence choreography. Me, Nikki [Reed], and Kellan [Lutz] are working today, and we’re doing another installment of the fight sequences. We’re doing a section of the huge vampire/Cullen/wolf/newborn battle.

What’s it like working with different directors on the same character?

At first, it’s a little difficult; it’s a lot of give and take. Everyone’s different and has their own take on it, but it’s been pretty good. You have to sit down and go, “This is what I’ve been doing, this is why I feel this way,” and you have to take suggestions. Basically, it’s about communication, and it hasn’t been a problem yet.

MTV: Kristen Stewart Says Bella Matures Quite A Bit In ‘New Moon’

‘The movie takes a downturn,’ she says of the follow-up to ‘Twilight.’

By Jocelyn Vena

Kristen Stewart isn’t the only one growing up in the public eye. Her onscreen alter ego, Bella Swan, is also becoming a young lady on the big screen. And Stewart admits that when Twilighters hit the theaters next November to see “New Moon,” Bella is a different girl than they saw in “Twilight.”

“I’m excited for the movie — a different kind of excited though because I’m finished filming that. I want to see how it turns out,” she said in an interview for the November issue of Allure. “The movie takes a downturn. In the first one, it was all about discovery and in this one, Bella matures quite a bit.”
