These days, Alex Meraz, the 24-year-old actor who plays New Moon’s Paul — the most explosive member of the wolf pack — is washing his hands. As well he should — following New Moon’s giant, record-breaking weekend, the actor is getting recognized more than ever. And that’s quite a change for Meraz, considering his previous work includes small indie flicks, and a small role in 2005’s The New World. The actor took time out of shaking hands to talk to EW about Native Americans in film, working out for the role, and why he’ll never be a diva.

Aceshowbiz:Alex Meraz Talks About Haters And Becoming Sex Symbols

Billed to play as a werewolf named Paul in the upcoming “The Twilight Saga’s New Moon,” Alex Meraz says he has met some haters who don’t like his character.

Joining the cast ensemble of the highly anticipated “The Twilight Saga’s New Moon,” Alex Meraz says he has met some haters despite the fact that the movie is still months away into its U.S. release. “Someone started yelling at me because they didn’t like my character,” he told E! News at a Carrera Vintage Sunglasses party at the Chateau Marmont hotel on Thursday, May 7. 

“I play a bad boy, so she got mad at me,” the 24-year-old actor explained about his character as a werewolf named Paul. “She said, ‘I hate you, Paul!’ That was the craziest thing for me - being confused for a character.” He added, “I yelled back at her, ‘I love you, too!’”

Empire:First Look At The ‘New Moon’ Wolf Pack

With filming well underway on Twilight sequel,New Moon (or The Twilight Saga: New Moon to give it its Scrabble title), we’ve got our first look at the film’s mightily buffed Wolf Pack, who’ve been braving the chilly on-set weather in Vancouver to get all Chippendale on us.

The New Moon Wolf Pack are a group of shapeshifting Native Americans who live in the Indian community of La Push in Washington state, and provide intrigue for Bella (Kristen Stewart) when vampire love Edward (Robert Pattinson) goes - quite literally - off the reservation. The Wolf Pack are played by newcomers Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Bronson Pelletier, with each boasting Native American heritage of their own.

Access Hollywood caught up with actor Alex Meraz, who plays pack member Paul, Tuesday night at the premiere of “17 Again” in Hollywood, where the actor revealed some chilling details about working on the November-due film.

Twilight fans have been running off their feet to catch a glimpse of New Moon stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.

New Moon, the second book in the Twilight series, is being shot at locations across British Columbia and the Twilight fansites and Twitter networkers are actively stalking the production and broadcasting locations as they become known.

Michele Danielov has staked out two New Moon locations hoping for a peek at the stars.

They are already the subject of feverish fan-site activity by Twilight nation.  And this is just the beginning.

“These kids are kids whose life is going to change,” casting director Rene Haynes tells Celebuzz in an exclusive interview. “They are now stars.”

“And right now they are just getting the tip of the iceberg.”

Summit Entertainment Announces ‘New Moon’ Wolf Pack

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT RUNS WITH THE WOLF PACK IN THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON

Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman to Star as Members of Wolf Pack 

Los Angeles, CA March 23, 2009 — Summit Entertainment announced today that Native American/First Nation actors Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman have signed on to star as the members of the wolf pack in THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON. In the film, the wolf pack defends humans against vampires although they have a tribal history intricately entwined with Edward Cullen and his family. The wolf pack members will join Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and fellow wolf pack member Taylor Lautner in the film directed by Chris Weitz which will be released domestically November 20, 2009.

In THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). Suddenlyshe finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.

Each member of the wolf pack is of Native decent. Spencer is Lakota (Sioux), Pelletier is Cree-Metis, Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Gordon is Hualapai, and Houseman, who was discovered at an open casting call, is Cree. Casting of the wolf pack was overseen by award-winning casting director Rene Haynes who is well-known for her work on Native projects ranging from DANCES WITH WOLVES to BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE.

The action-packed, modern day vampire love story and blockbuster success of the first film in the series entitled TWILIGHT was released in theatres on November 21, 2008 grossing $69.6 million domestically during its first weekend. To date the film has grossed nearly $380 million worldwide. TWILIGHT was released on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD this past Saturday, March 21st and sold over 3 million DVD units in its first day of release making it one of the top five best first day DVD releases over the past two years.
